The proposed resolution amends the Police Department’s operating budget and authorizes the Mayor and Chief of Police to accept a Project Safe Neighborhoods grant award from the State of Wisconsin Department of Justice in the amount of $15,642. MPD anticipates using the funding in 2020 for overtime expenses. There is no match requirement or city funding necessary. The resolution also authorizes MPD to charge overtime to a Dane County Narcotics Task Force Project Safe Neighborhoods award of $20,000. The timing of Task Force spending is investigative case driven.

WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Justice has developed a nationwide Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative to reduce violent crime, gun violence and gang activity, by linking together federal, state, and local law enforcement, prosecutors, and community leaders, to provide a multifaceted approach to deterring and punishing these illegal activities; and,

WHEREAS, this ongoing effort will allow local law enforcement to combat violent crime by building on the effective strategies and partnerships developed under PSN; and,

WHEREAS, the Wisconsin Department of Justice has made a subaward to the Police Department in the amount of $15,642 for overtime through its Violence Reduction and National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) Ballistic Casings Entry Initiatives through September 30, 2022; and,

WHEREAS, the Wisconsin Department of Justice has made a subaward to the Dane County Narcotics Task Force of which up to $20,000 may be used for gun violence and gang prevention overtime for MPD officers on the Task Force through September 30, 2022.
